Assembly Instructions for the Homebrew Basic Stamp 2 on a Protoboard
This provides assembly instructions for the Homebrew Basic Stamp 2. The silkscreen on the PCB is very good and you should have little trouble quickly and accurately assembing this high qualtity board.
I suggest mounting all low profile components first, followed by the electrolytic capacitors, power jack, D-sub connector, and finally the 7805 regulator. This will assure that the board will sit reasonably flat during assembly and also assure a minimum of difficult in mounting some of the smaller components.
- R1, R2, R4, R5, 4.7K (yellow, violet, red) 1/4 W.
- R3, 330, (orange, orange, brown), 1/4W.
- There are two links at the 28-terminal IC. Use some of the scrap leads from the abover resistors.
Note that on the underside of the board, there are markings for surface mount capacitors C9, C10, C12 and C13. These are not used.
- D1, 1N4004. Place such that the band on the diode is aligned with the silkscreen on the PCB.
- D2, 1N4148.
- U1, U2 and EEPROM sockets. Install the 28, 16 and 8-terminal sockets. Align the notch on the end of the sockets with the silkscreen. Do not install the integrated circuits at this time.
- RST, switch, pushbutton,
- POWER, LED. Align such that flat on LED is aligned with the silkscreen.
- RS232, 9-term D-sub connector. Placing this requires alignment of all 9-terminals with the holes on the PCB. Check to be sure none of the terminals are bent. Place and gently turn back and forth, while exerting minimal pressure until the connector drops into place.
- Q1. 20 MHz ceramic resonator, 3-term SIP.
- C1, C2, C3, C4, C5. 1.0 uFd. Align the minus sign with the silkscreen.
- C6. 0.1 uFd capacitor. This capacitor is not polarized.
- C7, 220 uF, 25 VDC, Jameco 30497. Align the minus on the capacitor with the silkscreen.
- C8, 100 uF, 25 VDC, Jameco 93762. Align such that plus side of capacitor agrees with plus sign on the silkscreen.
- PWR, coaxial power connector jack, 2.1 mm center, Jameco 101178. After placing, bend the tabs to hold the jack in place while soldering.
- VR, 7805 Regulator.
Prior to applying power, inspect your work and correct any bad solder joints or solder bridges.
Apply power (8 to 15 VDC) at the coaxial power socket (center positive). You should see the LED turns on. If you have a voltmeter, verify the voltage between the +5V and the GND busses is nominally +5 VDC.
Install the 24LC16B, MAX232 and the PIC16C57 in the appropriate sockets.
